Coordinating eCare to Improve Quality of Life for Elderly

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC | MADRID – October 23, 2019: JAGGAER, the world’s largest independent spend management company, through its area of European Projects, has been selected by the European Commission to coordinate eCARE, a healthcare project aimed at seeking digital solutions to prevent and manage the fragility of elderly people and thus improve their quality of life.

The project has a budget of 5.6 million, 90% financed by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program. It involves institutions from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Poland and will be in force on 31 August 2023.

eCARE aims to provide innovative digital solutions for the prevention and comprehensive management of fragility with a view to promoting the independence and well-being of older people, as well as reducing the budgetary burden of health services.

The entities that take part of the project are the Consorci Sanitari Integral (Hospitalet, Barcelona), the City Council of Santander and Ticbiomed (Murcia); the Azienda Sanitaria Locale de Benevento (Italy), the Falkiewicza hospital of Wroclaw (Poland) and the Irmandade da Santa casa da misericordia da Amadora (Portugal).

Fragility and loneliness, the main challenges of an increasingly long-lived society

Longevity is one of the greatest milestones of modern societies: by 2020, a third of Europeans will be over the age of 60. Together with low birth rates, this will lead to changes in the structure of European society, with a consequent impact on our economic system, social security and health.

The most sensitive aspect of an aging population is fragility as a clinical condition, which in turn affects multiple physiological systems. It is estimated that between 25 and 50% of people aged 85 and over are fragile, a fact that may reach epidemic proportions in the coming decades.

In 2016, another initiative of the European Projects area of JAGGAER (at that time BravoSolution) won the prize of the newspaper Expansión as one of the 50 Digital Ideas of the year. It was the RELIEF project, one to find ICT solutions for patients with chronic pain and also co-financed by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 program.

RELIEF also received the prize for the Innovative Idea in Pain, awarded by the Spanish Society of Pain (SED) and AERCE (Spanish Association of Purchasing, Contracting and Supply Managers).
